Piling imminent on Brisbane’s first new river crossing in 10 years

After months of detailed planning and modelling, piling work is set to begin in October on delivering the first river-crossing bridge in more than a decade – the Neville Bonner Bridge.

As a cable-stayed, pedestrian-only bridge – supported by one pylon – it will stretch 320 metres from the retail, food, and beverage level of our $3.6 billion integrated resort to the cultural forecourt at South Bank, next to The Wheel of Brisbane.

Eleven piles will be installed at South Bank for the bridge abutment and then a further 12 in the river for the mid-river pier and some to support temporary works.

Destination Brisbane Consortium Project Director Simon Crooks said the start of bridge works was an exciting milestone for the project.

“We can expect to see sections of the bridge being lifted into position from early next year, which is going to help people realise the game-changing opportunities that this connection will create,” Mr Crooks said.

“Although the piling work will be the noisiest part of the build, our appointed contractor – Fitzgerald Contractors – and our team have been meeting with key stakeholders and near neighbours to ensure they’re aware about the construction program.

“Where we can, we’ve worked hard to minimise impacts as much as possible on their operations and activities by scheduling our works to take place at times that are most suitable to them.”

At this stage, piling is scheduled between 8.06am and 8.29am and then again 11.06am and 11.59am, Monday to Friday.

Queen’s Wharf Brisbane, including the Neville Bonner Bridge, will open in late-2022.
